I’m a firm believer in trying out the sites and tools I recommend for visitors to One World Classroom. It’s about building trust. It’s with this in mind that I headed over to our affiliate FutureLearn‘s site and signed up for a couple of classes.
The particular class I want to tell you about is one by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Build a Makerspace for Young People. I’ve always liked the idea of setting up a bunch of Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, and 3-D printers and just letting people create all kinds of neat stuff. What I couldn’t see, though, is how to pay for it.
This course actually provides you with a planning process and supporting spreadsheet to seriously consider setting up a Makerspace of your own, whether it be in your school or a public space. They provide you with lots of examples, inspirational videos from others who have made it happen, and lots of good, practical advice.
I highly recommend this course, especially to those who are kind of a nerd like myself and wouldn’t mind sharing their inner geek with others. If you are aa tech teacher at a public school then you definitely want to check this out because they talk about funding sources and where people have been able to find funding for their projects. Your dream lab might just come true.
FutureLearn offers hundreds of free courses in many different areas. So, with all these free courses how do they make money? Quite simply, free courses only allow you a limited time to take the course and then it goes away. You still get the information, you just don’t get a certificate or future access to the materials. For a small fee, you can buy a course and access it for as long as it is on FutureLearn and you get a certificate. Their unlimited yearly access allows you to to take as many courses as you like and retain access to the materials See the chart below for more benefits).
Well, I’m off . . . I signed up for three more courses on FutureLearn and I want to get a head start on them.
- Access to the course for the duration of the course, plus about a week.
- Access to the course for as long as it is on FutureLearn
- A print and digital Certificate of Achievement once you’re eligible
- Access to the current course plus hundreds of others for a year
- A printable digital Certificate of Achievement on all short courses once you’re eligible
- The freedom to keep access to any course you’ve achieved a digital Certificate of Achievement on, for as long as the course exists on FutureLearn
- The flexibility to complete your choice of short courses in your own time within the year
